daughter of the late Cecil Clyde and Gertie Agnes Gann Cook, was born in Bernie, Missouri on June 6, 1925, and entered Heaven's gates on August 5th, 2019, at the age of 94 years.
Mrs. Whitehead had been a resident of Festus, Missouri for 54 years. She was a charter member of the Bethel Free Will Baptist Church in Festus, which was founded in 1974. There she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, taught various Sunday school classes, served as Secretary and in many other capacities throughout the years. Bernice's Christian Faith and her family were the center of her life. She loved attending church services, spending time with family and dear friends, reading, crafting and cooking. Bernice was employed at Bussmann Fuse in St Louis until her retirement in December 1983.
On February 8, 1945, she was married to Joseph Homer Whitehead in Clay County, Arkansas. He preceded her in death on January 27, 1965.
Surviving are three children: Joe Whitehead of Festus, Tommy Whitehead of Festus, and Terri (Bill) Jones of Festus; two grandchildren; Brooke Moonier of Godfrey, Illinois and Jason Whitehead of Hammond Indiana; three step-grandchildren; Matt (Christy) Jones of Powder Springs, Georgia, Timothy Jones of Dallas, Texas and Melissa (Mike) Johnson of Webster Groves, Missouri. Four great-grandchildren; Henry, Lily, Caroline & Benjamin; three sisters: Barbara (Delbert) Maddox of Malden, Missouri, Judy Walker of Bernie, Missouri, and Della (Marlon) Crossland of Festus; one brother, Clifford (Eva) Cook of Dexter, Missouri. Many other precious relatives and friends also survive. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Cook & Carlyn Cook; and three sisters, Neita (the late Floyd) Pullum, Alberta (the late Lloyd) Pullum and Carolyn (the late JC) Link. Bernice was also preceded in death by a precious Mother-in-Law Zetta Whitehead of Pevely, Missouri, and many in-laws that she loved deeply.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, August 8th, 2019 at the Bethel Free Will Baptist Church, 1233 American Legion Dr, Festus, MO 63028, with Rev. Mike Hoggard, Pastor officiating. Family Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. and friends may pay their respects beginning at 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the Bernie Cemetery in Bernie, Missouri with Vinyard Funeral Home in Festus, Missouri in charge of arrangements. Memorial in her memory are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association.
